What to Do If You Smell Gas in Your Home or Business

Propane is naturally odorless. As a safety measure, a harmless chemical called mercaptan is mixed in to make it smell like rotten eggs. If you suspect a propane gas leak, it is important to quickly take action. Be sure to follow the steps below if you get a whiff of this unpleasant propane smell.

1. No flames or sparks.
Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate electrical switches, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.

2. Leave the area immediately.
Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking. Find shelter at least 300 feet away from the area experiencing the suspected leak.

3. Shut off the gas at the tank.
If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank right away. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise). If the gas leak is in a cellar or basement, do not enter and instead evacuate the building.

4. Report the leak.
Once you are safely away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer right away. If you cannot reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department.

5. Do not return to the building or area.
Stay clear of the area until your propane retailer, emergency responder, or qualified professional determines that it is safe.

6. Get your propane system checked.
Before you attempt to use any propane appliances, contact your local FS Propane Specialist for an inspection. A qualified professional must check your entire propane tank system to ensure it is leak-free.
