Illinois Governor Pritzker recently passed legislation extending the current 11% biodiesel blended fuel sales tax exemption through 2023. We commonly refer to this biodiesel blended fuel as B11. Beginning April 1, 2024, the blend level increases from B11 to B14, from B14 to B17 in 2025, and from B17 to B20 in 2026.
By meeting these requirements, Illinois consumers will continue to enjoy sales tax free purchases through the end of 2026. B11 will be exempt December through March each year until the end of 2026 to address winter operability.
Illinois has a long history of supporting the use of biofuels. The state introduced this innovative sales tax exemption in 2003. This has no doubt led to the success in biodiesel usage in the state.
Illinois ranks fourth among all states in biodiesel production and third in consumption. The United States consumed 1.66 billion gallons of biodiesel in 2022. Illinois was just shy of 10% of that consumption at 160 million gallons.
